La Whiskeria
“Always carry a flagon of whisky in case of snakebite, and furthermore, always carry a small snake.”
Wise words from the American jester W.C. Fields, who was clearly partial to a drop or two of “liquid sunshine”. If you are too, then be sure to drop by this timelessly-elegant whisky bar, just a few minutes walk from Plaça Catalunya.
With over 1,000 references of every variety, from single malts, blends, bourbons and Scotches, La Whiskeria is easily one of Europe’s biggest and best-stocked whiskey bars. Not only can you get your hands on legendary brands like Balvenie, Blantons, Glenlivet and Kavalan, but you’ll find blends from scores of local and independent distilleries (like Springbank) in stock behind the bar.
If you’re not one for drinking whiskey neat, then take a peak at their cocktail menu, which features the likes of Eden Sour (Toki Japanese whiskey, melon liqueur, apple, lemon and soda water) and their own take on the Old Fashioned (Michters US 1 Single Barrel Rye, sugar cane syrop, house bitters), along with several gin, rum and mezcal based drinks.
The accompanying food menu is short and sweet, comprising of street food from whiskey-produced countries: Derby Dog is a luxurious take of the American hot dog, Katsu Sando is a much-fêted Japanese pork chop, while La Whiskeria’s version of Scotch Eggs are breadcrumbed and battered quail eggs in whiskey gravy.
All of these sensory pleasures take place amidst lovingly-restored antique furnishings, vintage artwork and low-slung divans, while a tasting room at the back offers a more secluded spot for sipping. And if the weather is fine, pull up a chair on their street terrace – the bar is open from 5pm every day.
