Faire Brunch & Drinks
Ethical eating in a retro-chic cafe
Life offers us few truly guilt-free pleasures, but for conscientious world citizens brunch at Faire Barcelona can squarely be considered one of them.
To start with, the vegetarian menu is made from 99% kilometre-zero products, meaning that everything is sourced locally, leaving the lowest possible carbon footprint behind; while the restaurant runs on 100% renewable energy, food waste is turned into compost and even the loo roll is made from recycled paper, by a company that sends 50% of its profits to Africa.
The few animal products Faire does use are sourced from cruelty-free providers, such as the Costa Brava farm that provides Faire with eggs from free-range chickens, or milk from an ethical dairy farm (although you can drink your coffee with oat milk for even cheaper!).
Faire’s gorgeous retro look is the result of scores of hand-picked 1950s and 60s memorabilia, such as rotary-dial phones, clickety-clack typewriters, Italian Vespas and the odd Eric Clapton LP. There’s even some personal items sitting amongst the treasures, including the owner’s grandma’s salon mirror and his father’s Pentax camera, that once chronicled half of Europe on 35mm film.
Food-wise and Faire specialises as a brunch restaurant which serves up generous portions of exquisitely prepared healthy food. Toasts come slathered with avocado and beetroot, or scrambled tofu, and topped with green leaf salads, while pancakes are laden with berries and syrup, and chocolate if you wish. Their Beyond Burger is something of a signature dish, and best served with vegan bacon (which is tasty enough to convert the most entrenched carnivore!).
Everything at Faire is done with attention to detail and a touch of love, from the seeds and flowers in your smoothie to the free 2-litre bottle of filtered water on each table. Oh yes, and the owners plant a tree for every customer that visits. So you can go forth and breathe freely!
