Casa Gispert
Traditional roasted nuts & local specialties
Walking into Casa Gispert is almost like stepping back in time. They’ve been roasting nuts here ever since 1851, and it feels like things haven’t changed much since they began. This shop tucked away on a quiet street next tothe Santa María del Mar churchlooks tiny, but it’s surprisingly big once you get inside. Make your way through a narrow aisle stuffed to the brim with beautiful roasted nuts, dried fruits, coffees and teas, wines, jams, sweet wines, spices… there are all kinds of tempting treats here. They are traditional too.
The shop originally sold products from exotic faraway countries in addition to its home-roasted nuts. You could spend hours poring over the offerings, but it’s worth taking a look at the very back of the shop. There, you can see the wood-burning oven where they roast the nuts. It’s the oldest one of this type in all of Europe, and it’s still in full use today. You can occasionally see the nuts being roasted yourself if you catch them at the right time.
This is a great place to find souvenirs and gifts for your foodie friends. Or, you could just stop by to try a little bag of the roasted nuts yourself (the salted Marcona almonds are especially nice). You may end up going back for more! Like the sound of this place?
